Veteran

Waterford

Sergeant Lawrence R. Smith was not only the hero of our family, but a man who served with exceptional courage during World War II. From 1943 to 1946, he served with Battery B of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, most notably on the front lines as a Forward Observer during the Battle of the Bulge. He also served with the Army Air Force in 1944.

The Observation Battalion set up and operated surveying and fire control instruments to locate gun positions and observation posts. They computed data for firing and for location on the ground for coordinates.

His service carried him across England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and Czechoslovakia—often under harsh and dangerous conditions. He endured bitter cold and frostbite, yet rarely spoke of his hardships or the medals he earned. What stayed with him most was not his own suffering, but the loss of the many men he served beside in his unit. That burden, carried quietly through the years, spoke to his sense of loyalty and service.

Sergeant Lawrence R. Smith left a legacy of honor, sacrifice, and quiet courage that continues to inspire our family today.
